generation like blog post

I personally believe, that youtube stars are empowered. They are empowered through technology to do what they're passionate about. They upload videos onto a video-sharing network called "youtube" that projects and shares their videos amongst millions of people.  The network allows the audience of the videos to like, share, comment  and subscribe to these videos. These are the currency of this generation, through this teens felt that social media eventually led to their empowerment, They say that's empowering because they can deliver a verdict instantly. Many "you-tubers" are teens that by the domestic growth of these "likes", "shares" "subscriptions" ..... feel empowered and stand out amongst a group of people. The growth stage over time of like and followers makes these individual recognizable to a greater community and attracts a larger audience to view his youtube channel which later one results in fame.

Media plays a significant role in shaping this situation, It is said that the power of the States/ countries  is the military force followed by economic power . In this era the power of media has been added.its  a driving force unlike anything the world has ever been exposed to,  a tool with a great impact and strength.  Countries strengthened and fortified  their media and directed to serve its interests and orientations ... Now therefore, became much more powerful than military and economic unity since they don't serve as much as media since it controls and drives numerous amounts of human masses, hence if an individual has control in of this medium or attributes to it significantly and has is more likely to be empowered. Thus why youtube stars are rather empowered than exploited since they have control over this powerful medium.

advertisers moral duty

In my opinion I believe that advertising companies should avoid stereotyping in their commercials since many would consider it outrageous and humiliation to certain ethical groups. advertising nowadays is a well known strategy to make sure that a certain group of people are willing to spend their money on your'e product but after all why should it humiliate certain people. advertisements are worldwide they are seen and judged by many, for example an advertisement for coke could range from the United states all the way to the middle east and thats quite a distance but the real question here is, is it funny that advertisers include stereotyping portrayals in their ads or is it a form of entertainment? well in my point of view it onset funny or entertaining as many people are getting offended by the advert itself and by people mimicking them or making inappropriate comments on the physical appearance due to an ad they saw that portrayed them in an inappropriate manner. for example I saw an advertisement that was stereotyping gender roles in which they portrayed a women being all sassy and weak while on the other hand they portrayed the man as being strong and powerful and that not necessarily true because taking a look at the real question here which is do advertising companies have a moral duty to avoid stereotyping, well the answer is yes since they should educate children to have a correct view of the world in which in this case both men and women have equal rights.

Print Ad analysis

An advertisement's main purpose is to make sure that a certain product is portrayed as the best product available on the market and that nothing is better than that companies product. There are many ways in which they portray something in a positive manner however under every advertisement there must be a secret hidden message that lies underneath it that would reveal certain things and ideologies that serve to portray certain issues in our society and region therefore they intend to serve an intended message. this advertisement general is about a product named Nivea, this advertisement was released in  2014 as you can see through this advertisement there is a close contact between the male  and the female as shown in the print Ad. Many could argue that this ad revolves around the need for intimacy, as there are several instances in which this advertisement sends and gives the targeted audience specific information regarding the people empowered in this Ad. This advertisement clearly shows that the woman is in the centre of the Ad making her seem more powerful than the man resulting in dominance in her position rather than the man as he seems to be cut out of the frame since he’s shown a bit to the corner and that he is behind her  indicating that the man isn’t as valuable is the woman in this situation thus indicating that women in this Ad are shown as the dominant and empowered side. throughout this advertisement there is a reason in which women as shown more powerful  than the man since this advertisement targets women not men. Nivea is a company that has many products worldwide along the globe but in this specific Ad they target the skin as its smooth and soft indicating that this would only suit a women. you could also indicate that the perspective of this advertisement clearly eliminates the man as we could clearly identify that he is marginalised as throughout this ad we could only see that the many plays a small role while on the other hand the women plays a vital role in this advertisement. there are several factors in this Ad that indicate and show that there are certain things about our societies as having a soft skin is only a feminine thing. as beauty only is  referred as a feminine thing that is only applicable to women in our societies. therefore they would use these techniques to make sure that the women targeted buy their product and they make sure they trigger that sensation by informing them that they should have the that soft skin. therefore this shows us that society makes us see that women are the soft kind of people while men are tougher so they don’t need such a product.

Pitch reflection

Throughout our english class we were divided into groups in order to pitch and come up with a plan in order to advertise and persuade the committee in using us to advertise a certain product. Throughout my groups pitch I believe that  there were many techniques that appealed to boost our pitch in many beneficial ways as we had used the bandwagon appeal throughout the speech of our group since we created a feeling and a sensation in our advertisement that would make the consumer consume the product because everyone is consuming it. As well as we used the appeal to desire in which we had used this appeal to associate and link the product with an everyday desire that teenagers keep dreaming off which is the desire to victory and liberty if they consume our product.

Throughout the presentation there were many techniques that we had used in order to persuade the audience throughout the presentation that we had conducted as we had used persuasive language that aimed to influence the audience. Nevertheless we had used appeals that were related to our product as an example we had used a celebrity to advertise the product just making the product more popular and desirable in the whole region as well as we had used many ideologies and concepts that were related to  Aristotle  and his beliefs and ideologies in persuasive language as we used his concepts of ‘ETHOS,PATHOS & LOGOS” to trigger a sensation in the audiences bodies. Moreover, knowing more about the context and the region in which we had to advertise our product in gave us a better hint and idea at what age group we should aim the product at and at which perspective should we focus more on. For example we had to advertise our product in the context of the UAE and therefore we had to identify ways in which we could link the product to that certain region of the world. Therefore when we knew the region we were going to advertise our product in we assumed that the targeted audience would be teenagers in that region and they would be teenagers that had a certain interest in video or you tubers since we had used a well known celebrity to  advertise the product known as KSI.

Throughout the powerpoint presentation we had included many images in our presentation in order to influence the committee and the audience and grab their attention so that they don't get bored and get hyped instead as ew went on with explaining our product and our ideologies regarding that product. We had included images of the product and the name of the product so that we as an advertising company seem credible and professional enough to take this task of advertising a product. Nevertheless, the use of images throughout the presentation helped us to influence and get into the audience in an effective manner so that they are convinced with our product and our ideas.

Finally, this presentation as a whole would benefit us as individuals when we are going to submit and present our FOA because throughout this presentation  we knew how we could adjust ourselves in several situations in which you forgot what you were saying or when you go off topic. As well as I believe that from this presentation we got a solid idea on how strong the FOA should look like in order to get a decent grade.

Diet Coke commercial analysis

throughout english class we have discovered and learnt more about media and we went into more depth regarding rhetoric media and how is it being used in our modern society. throughout the class we had discovered many aspects regarding the topics and ways in which are effective in order to do so. According to Aristotle “a greek philosopher” who wrote a whole book on “rhetoric” he explains its an art of persuasive talk and in order to be successful in it you should have three concepts present ethos, pathos and logos.Ethos is a Greek word meaning ‘character’. In terms of persuasive language, it is an appeal to authority and credibility. Ethos is a means of convincing an audience of the reliable character or credibility of the speaker/writer, or the credibility of the argument.Pathos is a Greek word meaning ‘suffering’ or ‘experience’, and it is used in persuasive speech as an appeal to the emotions of the audience. Pathos is the way of creating a persuasive argument by evoking an emotional response in the audience/reader.last but not least logos,Logos is a Greek word meaning ‘a word’ or ‘reason’. In rhetoric, it is an appeal to logic and reason. It is used to persuade an audience by logical thought, fact and rationality.

by taking a look at those concepts and acknowledged them I had taken an advertisement thats related to diet coke and i ha identifies the use of the elements in each one of them. before that lets mention the intended audience by looking at the video the intended audience is clearly fans of the artist that is being used to advertise the product or they could be fans interested in purchasing the product. That being said while looking at the diet coke commercial there were many instances in which the lens would zoom on the product and get a shot of it thus making it seem dominating. ethos and pathos two characters mentioned by Aristotle are shown when the video shows the artist taylor swift composing a song while she is taking a sip of the diet coke and later on shows the civilians in situation continuing the songs while they have a diet coke. it could also be stated that there is a message at the end which says “Diet Coke stay extraordinary” and thats persuasive language in which its using and triggering the emotions of the audience convincing them to consume the product and example of pathos. so the ad clearly shows the use of ethos and pathos but not logos however its present in a small portion when displaying a successful artist performing on stage while she is having or consuming their product.

letter to the editor

response to the editor
Throughout the recent years and decade it was well known that technology had a severe impact on our language, an example of that would be text-language. text- speak had a huge impact on how language is being portrayed as text-speak is being used by both adults and youth, looking at statistics it mainly shown that adults are the main people who use the language of text-speak.although it could be argued that it isn’t a new way of language it only a new form of communication.

Taking a look at the article “Twtr? its majorly bad!” it could be recognised that there has been a certain impact on the use of language. The language used in school work, school projects, interviews, media (news), memoirs and other types of communication could be disturbed and affected due to the language usage in the social media (twitter) there has been some slang found alongside with deleting some letter in words might affect the layout of your work. Throughout the use of abbreviation and some slang in theses types of social media (ex:- twitter) it could lead to affect people’s usage of words on a daily basis for example “omg!,lol and words like u instead of you and ur instead of you’re), this might lead to disturb a person’s way of interpreting and using language in inappropriate situations. It could be stated that using such a dialect might impact and affect it. Although if we think about it to actually remove the excess letters to make it easier to type in. You actually need to know the excess letters you are removing. Taking a look at what the the headmistress seems to be doubting is that she wont be able to accept is that despite this affect the usage of standard english had become stronger and stronger due to this concept. This didn't happen recently it could be argued that over certain time periods there had been a change in language and thus leading to change the concept of standard english. It is noticed that from the past there had been a change in the of standardised english thus making them interpret this as a variation of english. In my opinion I believe that this type of language text-speak should be considered as its own type of language descending from language, since it represents and interprets a way of communication, so in my opinion once again I strongly believe that text speak is a certain type of language.

Fictional interview

Interviewer: Hello ladies and gentle men welcome back to our lovely show, today we have one of the most talented artist in the middle east, he’s well known for winning the title of Arab’s got talent and winning the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Middle East Act. please welcome Mohammad Assaf.

Mohammad Assaf: Thanks for hosting me, I'm glad to be here with you.

interviewer: Well lets get right to it. you are one of the most talented Arab musicians in your era, you're well known for performing the works of classic Arab artists such as Mohammad Abdel Wahab. Can you tell us about some of the artists or bands that had influenced you within you're community?

Mohammad Assaf: sure why not, first of all there was a band named “al ashiqeen” which was a band that was found during the start of the Palestinian revolution back in 1965. They used to play on a station that was called “sur falesiteen”(wall of Palestine). As a child I used to listen to them a lot especially when i was in school, they were one of the most authentic Palestinian bands that had influenced me to be an artist alongside an influence regarding the type of songs that I play now a days. however there many other bands and artists that had influenced me like a band named “al buraq” and many others.

Interviewer: moving on, knowing that you're a Palestinian and that there is a war going on why do you Palestinians get into the music industry despite the Israeli blockade on Gaza and the harsh economic situations, why do you get into  music?

Mohammad Assaf: Well this shows that my community and I in the rest of the time we have in this life we still believe and hope that their well be a day when we get our country back, but we do enjoy music because despite this occupation we still have the right to be happy. We do sing songs of celebration, I mean that our lives aren't bitter and all but due to our circumstances and this occupation we are  forced to do things. however were a part of humanity we have the right to live happy and express our selves don't we?… talking about me now, since I was a kid I had dreamt of being a well known artist. My dream was to sing patriotic songs regarding my homeland despite the conditions we live in, it was hard for me to reach to the point of being famous and all I really struggled due to the blockade and the occupation. civilians lives in my community had changed and we needed to express this and i had done that throughout my music. Despite everything were still under occupation and many of our youth talent is hidden and I was an example of one. So Palestinians tend to get into music to express the emotions and sorrow towards their lives.

Interviewer: Thanks Mohammad that was an insightful answer that you gave us, looking at content and theme of you’re work, many have said that the use of language in you're songs had gotten them to enjoy you're art because of the way you use language to express you’re thoughts. do you believe that you had made a change in your community?

Mohammad Assaf: Well taking a look at the amount of people those in which who have listened to my work, I certainly believe that I had made a huge change in my Palestinian community since my songs were mainly patriotic thus I was sharing with them their experiences under the occupation alongside with how much we all love Palestine. However I don't believe that I had only affected my community only I believe that I had touched and inspired others as well. taking that back to songs i have sang like "ali al koofeyeh" the language used in their is pretty sensitive and emotional as my aim was to touch Palestinians heart and give them an insight towards my thoughts and feelings about my homeland. I believe that this patriotic song had touched and influenced myself and many other communities in the world thus making a change in them by the use of language and content of my work.

Interviewer: thank you mohammed for being here with us, I hope that we get a chance and see you next time but until then I hope you have a great life.

Language and Identity

Hello guys, welcome back !

Throughout todays blog I am going to be talking about three texts that I  had been assigned to read over the Eid holiday. Im going to discuss how these three texts link to the content that had been covered in class over the last week or so.

The first article “Understanding how the brain speaks two languages” by Jeffrey Kluger talks and portrays the ideal of how the brain could speak more two or more languages which is a necessary skill. “Learning to speak was the most remarkable thing you ever did. It wasn’t just the 50,000 words you had to master to become fluent or the fact for the first six years of you life you learned three new words per day,” I found that this quotation seems interesting since Kluger here explains the extra work that bilingual speakers take on. Showing us that their are many benefits behind the ideal and concept of being a bilingual. Taking a look back at what I have learnt I discovered that by reading this article I could see how code switching relates to a persons aspect in maintaining and fulfilling a gap that they have due to several language barriers. After reading this article as a bilingual I believe that I now have a better insight towards learning a third language and being a monolingual person, according to Kluger “monolinguals need more time.. its a life long advantage for bilinguals” as here it refers to knowledge and other aspects in life.

The second article published by The Guardian (online web page) talks about the levels of intelligence according to the British aspects and dialects. Throughout this article they talk about the different accents that are present in Britain and he specifically talks about the accents of Birmingham and Yorkshire. Throughout his article he highlights how stereotypes have a diminishing influence towards how one perceives intelligence through a dialect, he states that “people who said nothing at all were regarded as more intelligent than those with a Brummie accent”. Despite that their had been some reaches and test results that indicated that the people of Birmingham tend “to be very bright and friendly”. According to a survey that had been conducted and mentioned in the article their had been low ratings to Birmingham (5.6 out of 10) since they accosted them with criminal activity. While on the other hand Yorkshire tenants were portrayed as “wise, trustworthy, honest and straight forward”. Looking back at what i have learnt in class i could see a connection between both of the articles since as this article takes a look at the effect of language within a community, alongside with how hey are being viewed.

the third and final article published by Joan O,C. Hamilton’s “You say Up, I Say Yesterday” throughout this article the author portrays and states how languages accents differ “differ in myriad ways beyond simply having” looking at the title of the article we could sense that languages have different words with different meanings. this article mainly focuses on “language influences how its speakers focus their attention” as throughout this universe their are different cultures that provide different insights to ones language. Taking a look at this article i could conclude that it mainly underlines the ideal of how languages structure relates and links to ones personal culture and thoughts regarding a certain aspect, thus implying certain differences leading to certain barriers and limitations between different languages thus linking back to Boroditsky’s social experiments. This article has a huge link with the content that had been covered in class as in class we had covered certain aspects that had been discussed in this article. Throughout our class we had the chance to look up certain words thats had derived from certain cultures and how they differ in meaning due to a cultures approach of a certain word. Moreover, this article links with a task that we had done in class which was creating our own language, since we interpreted words we created and gave them a definition of our own.

Importance of you're mother tongue

Everything around us changes even languages do change, none of us speak the same type of english or arabic. Each one of us has his own accent has his own concept and style of english and arabic. It isn't necessary that any of those types is out-dated or “wrong” they are both considered right and this is because of “globalisation”. Globalisation had effected language in many  ways one of those would be by traveling from one place to another to get educated, employed, treated “medically” etc… Due to this movement a persons mother tongue is being affected by his surroundings thus leading to certain complications. Throughout this blog post I’m going to discuss the importance of a persons mother tongue and why it should be preserved so that it could be passed on to future generations. You're roots and origins all derive from you're mother tongue it defines who you are as it shapes out you're identity. Its your job to preserve it and maintain it from fading and being erased because of immigration or other aspects that may lead to its loss.

you're native language isn't like another spoken language it should standout it should be treated as if it was a treasure between you're hands compared to the other languages out their. You’re mother tongue is part of a you're personal, social and cultural identity. It is this identification you get from speaking you're  mother tongue that enforces successful social patterns of acting and speaking. You're mother tongue is an indispensable instrument for the development of intellectual, physical and moral aspects of education. Habits, conducts, values, virtues, customs and beliefs are all shaped through you're native language. It helps you shape you're identity so what if you don't have a mother tongue or loss it over the years due to lack if use and practice. you would have an identity crisis since its what represents you as a person and helps shape you because it indicates were you descent from as mentioned earlier.  mother tongue is one of the most important aspects an tolls used to preserve traditions and cultural behaviours, so basically without have a home language preserved everything that revolves around erodes.

we have to take a step for change and promote ones home language and preserve it no matter what because its a part of our identity and character.  home language helps value culture and traditions thats what I think on a personal level. On and economic scale you would have multiple languages so therefore, more job opportunities and could communicate with vast amount of people.

Good or Bad english?

The author of the text Bill Bryson states that thought the entire globe their are many of those who speak english and many of those who are willing to speak it. However, this has occurred due to the American and British dominance back in history as they had influenced many cultures and communities by the use of the english language. Although the author of the text states that there had been some shifts that had occurred in the language, for example when the germaneness applied the rules in latin onto english back in the 17th century. The author then metaphorically describes its as “asking people to play baseball using the rules of football” (p.197, line 2-3).Due to the shifts that had occurred in the language stuff that were said in the eighteenth century wont sound right to you in this era. In the eighteenth century it was correct to say “you was” but due to the shifts that had occurred in the language it would sound wrong to you because of the languages standard. When the author refers to “broken english” he refers to the simple errors that made in grammar which are easily made. This would mainly happen if english want you're mother tongue.

talking about myself I often make lapses in grammatical english since it isn't my mother tongue and this mainly happens when I speak and write. This is because arabic isn't quite similar to english as in arabic there is a different sentence structure different set of rules to follow while writing or reading arabic. Even though they aren't that similar i was still able to get the hang of speaking and writing english with a few grammatical mistakes once in a while. Although this had never stopped me from achieving or getting to my main point or argument.

A Good Name

Omar is a male given name of an arabic and hebrew origin. Its common name amongst all Arab and muslim territories along side with other Spanish speaking countries. In arabic the name Omar originates from the arabic word (العُمْر) which stands for life. In Arab cultures and societies the name Omar is an optimistic name dedicated to newborns so that they are expected to have a longer life spam. On the other hand in hebrew the name has been used to refer to people who were eloquent and gifted in speaking. First of all looking back at through history the name had been wide spread throughout the islamic culture in fact many of prophet Mohammad’s (PBUH) companions were named Omar an example would be Omar bin al-Khat’tab who was one of the closest companions to the prophet (PBUH).

Taking a look at the definition of my name I can clearly relate how my name has contributed to shape my identity. first of all this name belonged to a honourable man that was well known for distinguishing between the truth and false helped me realise the value of my name. The fact that this name belonged to such a venerable person helped me build up my identity. It made me realise that i should build a strong character to best suit and portray this name OMAR.
